It’s no secret that the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted us in nearly every area of our lives both personally and in business. The way we build relationships – a key aspect of growing your business has been heavily impacted, as has the way we work.
With the approaching holiday season, businesses would normally prepare to accommodate higher foot traffic and increased business by hiring seasonal employees for both brick and mortar stores and for warehouses for shipping a higher volume of orders. COVID-19 however has heavily impacted what is “normal” for the holiday season as people are shopping less in stores than ever before. The eCommerce industry as a whole is seeing tremendous growth, while many stores with physical locations are being forced to shutter their doors.
A survey by Engine found that people are now spending on average 10-30% more online than they were previously. eCommerce businesses that sell products such as at-home fitness equipment, pet supplies, groceries, at-home entertainment, baby items, cleaning products, and medicine or medical supplies have seen tremendous growth post-Coronavirus.
Here are some other statistics to consider:
- 36% of consumers report that they shop online weekly since the onset of the Coronavirus, which is from 28% pre-pandemic, according to new data from Digital Commerce 360.
- 29% of consumers currently shop online more frequently than in person
- 35% report an even mix of online and in-store shopping
- Post Coronavirus 28% of shoppers say they will continue to shop primarily online, with 39% saying they will shop both online and in-store
- 64% of shoppers indicated they wanted mobile and contactless pickup options available to them
- 79% said that a retailer offering contactless store pickup is very important
- 90% of consumers preferred home delivery
- 80% said they would be likely to use digital communications with store associates
The way eCommerce is done has changed rapidly in a short time and will continue to change and adapt for the indefinite future. The challenges faced by eCommerce businesses already this year have been plentiful – from shipping and logistics issues, closed warehouses, limited inventory available to having to work remotely – and now they will face a new challenge the holiday shopping season.
It’s a holiday season like never before, which means there’s little information and statistics available for eCommerce business owners on how to grow their business during a holiday season in the midst of a global pandemic. Phrases like the “new normal” are being used as the holidays rapidly approach, but what does this mean exactly?
